Ironman World Championship Race Results

Print

Newsflash! We have some additional race results to report from the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii!!

This event is the premier ironman distance event in the world and most triathletes can only dream of qualifying to compete in this prestigious event, let alone have any hope of winning. According to the event website: "Tens-of-thousands of triathletes try to get one of those coveted Ironman spots every year. Only 1,800 succeeded." Kona is to triathlon what Boston is to the marathon - the big enchilada.

GearLink is proud to say that one of our triathletes qualified for and raced in Kona this year!! Dan Chechele made the trip all the way to Hawaii to compete over the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run. The course is especially difficult given the hilly bike course over lava fields in hot windy weather. This is the original Ironman race that started it all and it earned that name for good reason. To finish this race you really have to be tough!!

Dallas Rose describes Dan as "Our team secret weapon" and "GearLink's long course man". I think Dallas is not relishing the thought of competing against Dan next year in the 50-54 age group.

According to Dan "Kona was definitely a tough day and the hardest event of them all. Of the other 6 events this year with podium finishes, Kona was definitely the most humbling. The bike tore me up to the point of lactic overdose in the run." But Dan had a great race overall, finishing with a time of 11:33:23. Dan's splits were 1:20:57 on the swim, 5:36:29 on the bike, and 4:27:17 on the run. Awesome job!!! Let's all give a big hand to Dan for a fantastic accomplishment!

Next up on the triathlon calendar for our team is the Ironman 70.3 Miami in which Dallas Rose will be competing this weekend. Let's all send Dallas positive vibes and wish him a good race!

Today was the Tarpon Springs Rotary Sprint Triathlon held at our own local Fred Howard Park and sponsored by, among others, Total Fitness and Chainwheel Drive. This was the 21st edition of the event, returning to the race calendar after a brief hiatus last year during work to rebuild the causeway.

The race consisted of a 1/4 mile swim, 10.5 mile technical bike course around Tarpon Springs that includes the Sponge Docks, and a 3.1 mile run out and back on the causeway.Let's get right to it and just say that this was an awesome totally kick-ass day for our tri team!! We had four teammates participating in today's race and we had three age group winners and one 2nd place!!!! How about that? The "Fantastic Four" include: Brandi Szen, Celia Dubey, Dallas Rose, and Ken O'Day.

In case you weren't aware this Saturday, October 30 was the premier showing of:

Dallas Does Miami (or is it Miami Does Dallas?)
Rated: XXX for extreme speed

The course for the Rohto Ironman 70.3 Miami, features a 1.2 mile swim in Biscayne Bay, a 56 mile bike though some historic Miami neighborhoods, and a 13.1 mile run along Bayfront Park. Over 2500 top triathletes competed, including a large contingent of international triathletes and professionals seeking to qualify for the World Championships. A stiff wind made for a tough bike leg and clear skies with temperatures hovering at 84 throughout the day made for a hot hot hot race.

Duathlon World Championships!

Print

Of course we are all aware that today was the Gearlink Cup race in scenic downtown New Port Richey and while we all anxiously await those race results, and hearing how our Gearlink teammates fared, we have some results from our tri team to report.

Duathlon World Championships!

The big news is that today Celia Dubey competed in the Duathlon World Championships in Edinburgh, Scotland! If you've ever been to Edinburgh you know how hilly the city is - it's tough to walk around there, let alone run 6.2 miles, ride 25.8 miles, and then run another 3.1 miles. In fact, the course is described on the event website as "one of the most challenging courses ever" for the duathlon worlds. Celia echoed that in her post race notes, saying "That was the most challenging course I have ever raced in my entire life!" The two runs together have a total elevation gain of almost 1000 feet and the bike leg has over 2000 feet of climbing (to put it in perspective that's like cramming more than the total climbing you would do in a 60+ mile San Antonio ride into 25 miles). This is not an event for the fainthearted. Check out the coronary inducing view from the top of the climb of Arthur's Seat (climbed 5 times on the bike).

Don't Miss the Labor Day GearLink cup

Print

AFTER A BRIEF SUMMER PAUSE, bike racing in Florida resumes with a great Labor Day weekend race schedule.  First on tap is Saturday’s GearLink Cup bike races in beautiful downtown New Port Richey.

Many of us have raced in the sticks (Ocala Road Race), in the dirt (Webster-Roubaix), in industrial parks (DeLand), and even on garbage dumps (Vista View), but downtown New Port Richey promises to be one of the prettiest downtown settings for a criterium ever chosen.  The 1k course will take racers across historic Main Street and through the recently re-developed sections of one of the west coast’s most scenic cities.  Spectators will watch the charging peleton circle its way around a lovely lake before it crosses the finish line next to Simms Riverfront Park on the banks of the beautiful Pithlachascottee River.
